Don't Forget These Areas During Spring Cleaning

Spring is HERE! This means that it's time for one of the season's classic events: spring cleaning! If you're anything like me, you relish any opportunity to clear out all of the clutter and grime that builds up inside during the winter months. Everyone does the obvious things like washing the floors and wiping off the tables, but there are lots of inconspicuous places in your home that can easily go overlooked. In this post, you can see which areas need a little more attention in order to ensure a thorough deep clean this spring!

Your Vacuum

Your trusty vacuum is one of the most essential cleaning tools in your home, but when's the last time you actually cleaned the cleaner? Over time, your vacuum can become choked with grime, which inhibits its suction and increases the amount of dust blown into the air. In order to keep it running at optimum efficiency, make sure that you periodically wipe down the inside chamber with a damp cloth and clean the filter! If you're up for it, you should also try to remove all of the wound up hair/string/stuff from the bottom brushes. I find that box cutters are helpful for this last task, but be careful not to damage the brush mechanism.

The Spice Rack

Over the years, any home chef tends to accumulate an unwieldy number of different spices, herbs, and other cooking ingredients in their pantry. Take this opportunity to remove everything from your spice storage area (mine is a cabinet) and give it a good wipe down. While you have everything out in the light of day, examine the flavorings that you rarely reach for. If you can't even remember the last time you used them, you're probably better off throwing them out to make room and reduce clutter. Yes, it hurts to toss out expensive spices, but in most cases they will lose their potency over time anyway. Give anything you aren't sure about a little taste to see if it is still worth keeping.

Around Houseplants

Another area that is sometimes overlooked is the space around and under your houseplants, especially if you have them all clustered in one spot. Take all of the plants outside and give their vessels a good wipe down. Before returning them, make sure to clean up all of the dirt, dead leaves, and cobwebs that may have collected around and underneath where they were sitting.

Sanitize the Little Things

With the addition of communicable disease (COVID,FLU,NOROVIRUS ect.) concerns spending time focusing on sanitizing small surfaces and objects that we regularly touch with our hands is important. But sometimes we don't think of cleaning certain surfaces all the time. Light switches, trash can lids, door knobs, TV remotes, and other small things become storage areas for germs and grime if they aren't sanitized semi-regularly. Give them all a solid scrub with your preferred disinfectant.

These are just a few of the household items and spaces that can be overlooked during any cleaning!
