Choosing the Right Style for Your New Home

paint cansSo you have finally received the keys to your new home and now comes the task of making the space your own. Before you start opening cans of paint there are a few decor myths that you should be aware of.

The age old rule that ceilings must be painted white is just not something one should put much weight in. While white is the most common color it does not mean that it works in every situation. Choosing a color that compliments the wall color is best and that can sometimes be a off white shade. The color you choose for the wall can be a bold color and the myth that this may make the space seem small is simply untrue. It can even make the space look larger when used.

Having all of your decor pieces match perfectly is a design trend that can work in some spaces but does not have to be the norm. An eclectic miss match of furniture and decor is inviting to a space as long as an underlying theme is present. Everything doesn’t have to be the same color but within the same color pallete is optimal. When working with metallic tones it is ok to mix them but be sure to stay within the complimenting colors. Copper and gold are warmer tones while nickel and silver are cooler tones and will compliment each other.

If you are dealing with a small space and you think paring down your furniture will make the space look bigger than you may be mistaken. Making sure the room is fully furnished will make the space feel utilized and cohesive. Pairing down large sectionals is a good idea but making sure seating is available is key. The fact that your decor might obscure the view of some pieces is not a no-no. Layering your decor can work to your benefit and make everything come together well.

When choosing pieces it is important to know who will be utilizing the space. Kids throw a monkey wrench into any design space. It is wise to remember that you can have nice pieces but choosing more indestructible fabrics and finishes will help down the road. This may cost you more in the beginning but will save you money in the long run.
