Storing Your Stuff? There Are More Options Than You Think

During these fast buying and selling times the necessity of storing your things before a new home is purchased might be a possibility. So when faced with the unfortunate need to store all your possessions outside your home, what do you think of? For most people, there is only one thing that jumps to mind: renting a self-storage unit. While this isn't a bad option, you might not realize that it isn't the only option! In fact, realtor.com has thought of at least four different ways in which a person can safely store their belongings for as long as necessary while they sort out their living situation.

An Old Standby: Self-Storage Unit

Of course, no storage list could possibly pass up the self-storage unit! Chances are high that you can think of at least 3 of these places off the top of your head just from driving around town. Storage units are so popular because they typically offer an enticing combination of convenience and affordability. Depending on the unit's size, location, and features, the price can vary widely, but this option is likely to meet the needs of the average person who finds themself between homes.

Bring the Storage to You: Storage Pods

Never heard of a storage pod? It's essentially a storage unit that comes to you! Simply call up the pod company and have them deliver your pod straight to your driveway. Once you've finished packing your stuff, call the company to have them deliver it to your destination. Alternatively, if you don't yet know where exactly you're going, just fill up the pod and let it sit in your yard for as long as you like. The downside? Pods tend to come in smaller sizes than traditional storage units and you have to find somewhere to put them. To find out how much this option will cost you, head over to the original PODS site and use their quote finder.

Store in Luxury: Concierge Storage

With a name like that, you know this is going to be the most expensive option. Otherwise known as full-service storage, concierge storage companies will literally inventory, pack, store, and/or deliver your items for you! This option has the convenience of not having to lift a finger and the security of knowing your stuff is safe at the expense of, well, expense. Also worth noting is that you will only be able to recover your stored items during business hours.

Wildcard: Peer-To-Peer Storage

You've heard of peer-to-peer ride services and peer-to-peer room services, now prepare to meet the future of storage! As the name suggests, peer-to-peer storage involves you renting another person's unused space in order to store your belongings. While this type of storage is the least flexible in terms of availability and space, it is the most flexible in price. If you can strike a deal with someone in the next town to rent their garage, you might be able to save 50% off the price of a comparable commercial unit. You can check out sites like StoreAtMyHouse.com to find someone local that may be able to accomodate your belongings.
